Are You Getting Enough Exercise?
Chances are about two-to-one that you have been, at least according to previous recommendations. But additional research indicates that perhaps more exercise is required for health benefit. The chances that you meet that standard are only 50-50, according to a study conducted by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published in their Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
Previous recommendations called for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. The new guidelines call for least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity five days per week, or 20 minutes of vigorous activity three days a week. The guidelines, promoted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, although they don’t call for more exercise minutes a week, emphasize more the importance of regular, daily exercise.
Compared to the Amish people, who have a very low incidence of obesity, and who walk an average of 14,000-18,000 steps a day, few Americans can manage 10,000 steps daily.
